Tony Matthews
Author and Historian
Tony Mathews, a reclusive Queensland author who is rarely seen in public, has been writing about Australian history since first arriving in the country in 1972. In fact within days of landing in Western Australia he had hitch-hiked to Queensland (with just $24 in his pocket) and had conducted his first oral history interview with a former gold miner (now long deceased) who admitted to Tony that while serving as a merchant marine officer during the Second World War he and a number of other crewmembers had murdered a German in cold blood, largely because the German was a U Boat submariner who had been killing countless innocent sailors on the Atlantic convoys. That grabbed Tony's interest really quickly and he has been deeply involved in all aspects of Australian history since that time.
Tony is the author of more than thirty books but he has also written and directed many television documentary films, some of which have been broadcast nationally. ABC Radio listeners may also have heard some of the 500 historical programs he wrote and narrated for the broadcaster.
